If you are trying to do the math by hand to figure out how many decking boards you need, here is the standard industry formula:
- Multiply that final number by 1.10 to add a mandatory 10% waste buffer for off-cuts, mistakes, and bad boards.
- Find the total square footage of your deck (Length x Width).
- Find the square footage of a single deck board (e.g., a standard 5.5-inch by 16-foot board covers 7.33 square feet).
- Divide the deck's total square footage by the board's square footage.
