How to Calculate Drawer Slide Clearance
The width of your drawer box is determined by two factors: the inside width of your cabinet opening, and the specific type of drawer slide you are installing.
- Standard Side-Mount Slides: Most standard ball-bearing side-mount slides require exactly 1/2 inch of clearance on each side. This means your drawer box must be built exactly 1 inch narrower than your cabinet opening.
- Heavy-Duty Side-Mount Slides: High-capacity slides are thicker and typically require 3/4 inch of clearance per side, meaning your box must be 1 1/2 inches narrower than the opening.
- Undermount Slides: Undermount hardware (like Blum Tandem slides) relies heavily on the thickness of the wood used for the drawer box itself. For 5/8-inch thick drawer sides, you typically deduct 3/8 inch from the total opening.

Q. What happens if I build my drawer box too wide?
A. If your drawer box is even a fraction of an inch too wide, the drawer slides will be compressed against the cabinet walls. For side-mount slides, this causes the ball bearings to grind, making the drawer incredibly stiff, loud, and difficult to open or close. In severe cases, the box simply won't fit into the cabinet opening at all. It is always better for a drawer box to be slightly too narrow (which can be shimmed) than too wide.
Q. Should I measure the cabinet opening at the face frame or the inside walls?
A. This depends entirely on how your cabinets are built. If you have traditional "face frame" cabinets, you must measure the inside width of the wooden frame opening itself, as this is the tightest point the drawer must pass through. If you have "frameless" (Euro-style) cabinets, you measure the distance between the two inside walls of the cabinet box. Always measure at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening and use the smallest number.
Q. Does the thickness of my wood change the drawer box width?
