Board & Batten Spacing Calculator

Board & Batten Spacing Calculator

Introduction

Planning a stunning accent wall?
The hardest part of installing board and batten is getting the math right so that every single gap is perfectly equal. Instead of doing complex fractions on a scrap of paper, use our free interactive calculator below. Just enter your wall width, the width of your wood, and how many panels you want to create.

How do you calculate spacing for board and batten?

To calculate board and batten spacing, subtract the total width of all your vertical battens from the total width of your wall. Then, divide that remaining space by the number of gaps (which is always one less than the number of battens) to find your exact spacing distance.

How to Use This Calculator

Getting accurate results requires taking accurate measurements of your space. Follow these steps:

1. Measure Your Wall Width: Measure your wall from corner to corner (or baseboard to baseboard) in inches. For the most accurate results, measure at the top, middle, and bottom of the wall, and use the smallest number if your walls are not perfectly plumb.

2. Determine Your Batten Width: Standard 1×3 MDF or pine boards are typically 2.5 inches wide, while 1x4s are 3.5 inches wide. Enter the actual width of the wood you are using, not the nominal name.

3. Choose Your Number of Battens: This includes the two pieces on the far left and right edges of your wall. If you want 4 empty squares/gaps on your wall, you will need 5 total battens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the standard gap between board and batten?

A.  While it depends heavily on the size of your wall and personal preference, a standard spacing gap for interior board and batten is typically between 12 and 20 inches. Smaller gaps create a more traditional wainscoting look, while wider gaps (16+ inches) give a more modern, craftsman feel.

Q. Should I start my battens in the middle or the edges?

A. Always start by securing your two outer edge pieces flush against the adjoining walls or corners. Once the borders are set, use a spacer block cut to the exact gap measurement provided by the calculator to easily nail your interior battens in place.
